In my last post about the clock I had laid out the template, and had a rough idea about how was going to put everything together. Spoiler alert, I used a biscuit joiner…
I did some pre sanding before I started combining the smaller sections into the larger whole. All of the sections came together really well using the biscuits and some jumbo clamps! After I got the whole set up together I used the table saw to square up the edges, and then came the hard part. I used my router to create a space for the clock piece. I did a lot of practice on some spare wood I had, and once I felt confident enough, I routed out the actual clock piece, and it turned out pretty well (full disclosure, I was a little nervous). Now I will say, in the lesson learned department, I had a little bit of damage from the routed wood being pretty thing, which resulted in a small break in the wood. I got everything fixed, but next time I make one, I think I’ll go a little bit more shallow just to prevent the possibility of a break in the thin wood. After I made the repair, it was time to stain.
I used a red chestnut stain that I think looks pretty good. Next I’m going to work on a template to cut out some wood slivers that will be the numbers. I’ll stain those a darker color so they really stand out. That’s where I am so far folks, let me know what you think! Ultimately I’ll be able to make round clocks as well, just waiting on a router attachment to come in. Do you think anyone would buy this??? More updates to come!
