Learn by Doing

I started wood working by accident. My wife bought an end table from a local garage sale that someone had basically ruined using the ugliest red paint you could imagine. endtable-before
Not only was the table pained a HORRIBLE color, but it had obvious water damage, and the structural aspect was suffering as well. Now I’m pretty handy, but I didn’t really have any interest in refurbishing this table, it was my wife’s project, and I was happy for her to work on it. After a few weeks passed, my wife realized she didn’t really want to spend any time working on it either, and I decided to give it a shot!
I titled this post “learn by doing” because that’s exactly what I’ve had to do with each and every project I’ve worked on. And this table is where it all began. From learning how to sand the wood, to learning how to repair broken or damaged pieces, to building a huge bookshelf from scratch (see future posts). It all started with this little rickety end table.
Now I will freely admit that when I began this journey, I didn’t know what I was doing, and if I’m honest, I still have a lot to learn. But once I saw what I could do with this table, I was hooked! I’m starting this blog because I love woodworking, but also because I want to be able to share (and learn) with others. So without any more rambling today, here’s what I turned that old end table into!
end-table-afterShe’s not perfect, but I’m definitely proud of her! Let me know what you think, I’ll post pictures of the process in a future post.
