I'm an amateur woodworking enthusiast! One day I hope to make and sell my own woodworking projects. I made this blog to connect with other woodworkers, and maybe help people who want to get into the craft but aren't sure how. Please follow my page for further updates! Any woodworking advice or questions are always welcome! Thanks!
This weekend I spent some more time working on my clock. Now full disclosure, this is the first one I’ve made, and I also want to make a lot of these in the future in the hopes that I can sell them. Don’t hesitate to offer advice!
In my last post about the clock I had laid out the template, and had a rough idea about how was going to put everything together. Spoiler alert, I used a biscuit joiner… Here’s a shot of the individual pieces coming together. Sections becoming larger…Sanding the smaller sections I did some pre sanding before I started combining the smaller sections into the larger whole. All of the sections came together really well using the biscuits and some jumbo clamps! After I got the whole set up together I used the table saw to square up the edges, and then came the hard part. I used my router to create a space for the clock piece. I did a lot of practice on some spare wood I had, and once I felt confident enough, I routed out the actual clock piece, and it turned out pretty well (full disclosure, I was a little nervous). Now I will say, in the lesson learned department, I had a little bit of damage from the routed wood being pretty thing, which resulted in a small break in the wood. I got everything fixed, but next time I make one, I think I’ll go a little bit more shallow just to prevent the possibility of a break in the thin wood. After I made the repair, it was time to stain. I used a red chestnut stain that I think looks pretty good. Next I’m going to work on a template to cut out some wood slivers that will be the numbers. I’ll stain those a darker color so they really stand out. That’s where I am so far folks, let me know what you think! Ultimately I’ll be able to make round clocks as well, just waiting on a router attachment to come in. Do you think anyone would buy this??? More updates to come!
Today I’m shooting for two posts, my first one this morning is about my newest project, and my post later today will be about the next project I tackled (after the ottoman I posted about yesterday).
Lately I’ve become acutely aware of how much extra or scrape wood I have from all of my past projects, so I’ve started trying to come up with ways to make use of the smaller pieces of wood. For example….
I have these beautiful 11.25 inch pieces from a previous project, and I thought to myself “Nick, lets make a clock”. Obviously my decision to make a clock took more than about 5 seconds, but after a few days of research, I came up with a design that I think will look pretty cool when it’s all said and done.
I started by cutting those pieces into one in strips, then cutting each strip in half. There’s still a lot of rough edges, but i laid it out in a basic square, and next I’ll start taking the rough edges off and squaring everything up. I think this will be one of those projects that I can do in a weekend, and the end product will look pretty beautiful. More to come folks!
